Madopar is used to treat Parkinson’s disease.

Madopar tablets contain the active ingredient levodopa, an anti-Parkinson’s medicine, and benserazide (as hydrochloride), a decarboxylase inhibitor that supports the action of levodopa.

People with this condition are known to have insufficient amounts of a substance called dopamine in certain parts of the brain. Signs of the disease include slow movement, muscle stiffness, and tremors, which may vary considerably between patients. In the brain, levodopa is converted into dopamine, thereby increasing the amount of dopamine in the brain to normal levels. Benserazide itself does not enter the brain but prevents levodopa from being converted into dopamine outside the brain. This helps reduce side effects in other parts of the body.

Taking this medicine may reduce the symptoms experienced by patients with Parkinson’s disease. However, Madopar does not cure the disease because it does not eliminate the cause of the dopamine deficiency in the brain.

Madopar 200 mg/50 mg tablets are cylindrical, biconvex, pale-red tablets with a faint mottled appearance. They are marked with “ROCHE” and a logo on one side and have two intersecting score lines on both sides.

The tablets are supplied in dark glass bottles with a polypropylene cap and a loose desiccant. Each bottle contains 50 or 100 tablets.
